MVP Contenders

Posted on 6:19 PM by Jack Ady

It's the beginning of the young season, so our panel of one biased judge doesn't have to make any tough decisions. Here are your MVP candidates at this point.

1. Carmelo Anthony. His beefy numbers of 34.5 points, 6.5 boards and 4 assists-- plus leading the NBA in efficiency-- still don't sum up his tough first week. Anthony took his team on his shoulders to win that tough back to back road in win in Portland, and the league has been abuzz with his torrid start.

2. Steve Nash. As I said earlier in my fake mail bag, Nash seemed to have slowed last season as his MVP caliber numbers finally dipped. However, this season he is freed from the bondage of Terry Porters poorly constructed offense he is back to his old tricks. Once again leading the league in assists, he's also lead his team to a perfect record so far.

3. LeBron James. Despite his teams well documented 0-2 start, the Cavs are now back above .500 and in great thanks to LeBron. His numbers are a humbling 25-8-8, not to mention the monster, demoralizing blocks that he's made a regular weapon in his arsenal. With LeBron on board, the Cavs should be just fine.

4. Dwight Howard. The undisputed best center in basketball, Dwight Howard led the Magic to a 3-0 record before the Pistons took advantage of some home officials and a plethora of bad calls to finally knock the magic out. Sure, they're ultra deep, but without Howard, they turn into a pretty mediocre ball club. If Howard can avoid his trend of getting into foul trouble, he could take the hardware home this year.

              5. Dwyane Wade. Wade is maybe the most underrated player in the NBA. think about it. Wade was finals MVP, then got hurt and his good team mates were traded away. Since then, it seems that many people have forgotten just how talented and hard working Wade is. The Heat lost its first game to the unbeaten Suns, who are pretty much the Heat kryptonite, since the Heat hates speed, and that's all the Suns do. Still Wade has been doing it all for Miami, and with one key addition could carry them to become Eastern contenders.

I'm extremely curious to see if Steve Nash will actually be in the race for MVP. Don't get me wrong. He's my favorite player, but I feel like the league over looks him because he's already got 2 MVP's under his belt. Will they really allow him a 3rd time? They wouldn't give it to him a few years ago when he deserved it. I'm not sure they would be willing to give it to him now.

The league loves to promote CP3 and he was in the running 2 years ago. This year he may not make it due to weak teammates.

If MVP stands for the best player in the league don't leave out Kobe. Kobe is relentless in his pursuit of another ring, of winning and of making a name for himself, he is not above keeping his team at the front of the leaderboard if that is what it takes.

If Boston (land of Geritol) can hold together and they emerge from the east, then Garnett will be in line for great recognition, regardless if he deserves it or not.

Good points about both Kobe and KG, but they both have the same Achilles heel; both of their teams are too good. The Lakers have Odom and Artest and Gasol, and the Celts have four legit All Star this year (Allen, Pierce, KG, Rondo.) KG might be super valuable to his team, but if he ends up with 10 points and 7 boards a game, that's just not enough to be MVP in this league.

Slight frustration-- Phoenix drafted Rondo then got rid of him for... what? Naw, Rondo would have been awful playing with Nash at a million miles an hour right?

Good points all around. CP3 is still very talented, but his team stinks.

As for KG and Kobe, they both have the same problem: teams full of All stars. Even if KG is crucial to his team, if he averages 9 and 7, that's just not going to cut it. Kobe still puts up beefy numbers, though...
